Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi – Gateway to the Safari

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), guests are met by their Winton Africa Safaris guide and transferred to a comfortable hotel in Nairobi. This day serves as both an orientation and introduction to Kenya’s rich cultural heritage. Guests can unwind after the flight and enjoy city amenities before embarking on their safari adventure.

An optional cultural excursion includes a visit to the Bomas of Kenya, where travelers experience the diverse traditions of Kenya’s ethnic communities. Here, visitors explore traditional homesteads, watch folk dances, and learn about the crafts and rituals that define Kenyan cultures. This initial exposure to culture sets the tone for the 11 Days Masai Mara and Northern Circuit Safari, emphasizing the integration of human heritage and wildlife conservation from the outset.

Nearby, Nairobi National Park offers a glimpse of Kenya’s wildlife even within city limits, with chances to spot lions, giraffes, zebras, and rhinos. This arid landscape is rich in species unique to northern Kenya and provides dramatic photographic opportunities along the Ewaso Ng’iro River, the lifeblood of the region’s ecosystem.

Morning and afternoon game drives allow exploration of dry riverbeds, rocky outcrops, and acacia-studded plains. The reserve is home to the “Samburu Special Five”: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and gerenuk. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards often hunt along the riverbanks, providing thrilling wildlife encounters. Guests can also observe elephants, buffaloes, and hyenas that have adapted to the northern savannah’s harsh conditions.

Cultural experiences complement wildlife viewing. Visits to local Samburu villages reveal traditional semi-nomadic lifestyles. Ol Pejeta is East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary and home to the last two northern white rhinos on Earth. Accommodation options range from luxury lodges to tented camps, providing comfort amidst a wildlife-rich environment.

Guests engage in morning and afternoon game drives, focusing on rhino conservation, lion tracking, and elephant herds that roam the conservancy.
